Day of living aims at redemption of the human right at living

Neighbourhood assistance on the building site makes building of houses in developing countries affordable. (openPR) - Cologne - living is a human right! Thus the United Nations already proclaimed it 1948 in the general declaration of the human rights. Since that time there are many efforts to meet the housing shortage more decided. The numbers to the housing misery however remain frightening: over a billion humans on our planet live roughly 100 million in dwellings beneath human dignity, are shelterless. The property living in the whole world has a high meaning. Who does not have a dwelling, by the society fast one expenditure-borders. Living stands in close relationship with the education, with the work, to the health. Apart from hunger and illness homelessness is a clear reference to the poverty of humans.

Each year for the international day of living reminds the DESWOS German development assistance for social housing and housing settlement registered association with seat in Cologne of this human right and sets on this day an indication with the promotion of a new project for the overcoming of the housing shortage.

As an official UN-anniversary the proclaimed international day of living stands this year under the slogan: Cities - magnets of hope. The chief of the living and settlement program of the United Nations, Anna Tibaijuka, asks rightfully: „If all humans into the cities flee, how the moths in the light, is then not the danger largely to burn there Where will the jobs be, where the shelter, the water, the electricity and the health services for all these humans “Migration from the land and uncontrollable growth of the cities are the strongest trends of the population movements, it are probably unreversible. In the Slums humans must get along with minimum and often organized services, an arranging state or not become a fürsorgliche city administration are hardly present and it also in the future to be. This perspective does not prevent the attacking immigrants, because the decision to the migration from the land lives on hope and not on the reality of the environment in the Slums and slum areas.

George Potschka, Secretary-General of the DESWOS, warns of the deceitful hope of a better life in the city: „The Landbevölkerung in Nicaragua, India or Kenya dreams to find in the capitals Managua, Mumbai or Nairobi sufficiently bread and work. This is however unfortunately only for a minority the case. The predominant part of the landvolatile continues to sink still in the misery. For it nothing remains, as a life in the rapidly growing Slums in the periphery of the large cities. Therefore an important beginning lies for the reduction of the housing misery also in the living conditions in the country. “

Potschka continues to describe that the DESWOS fights the causes of the migration from the land, by making the life in the rural area more attractive with their projects. Human being-worthy living is also in the country an important factor to become active there and to direct manpower in such a way that from huts firm houses and homesteads became. However further perspectives would have to come: Education and training for children and young people, new sources of income and auxiliary incomes for the workers without country and possession, communal facilities for the villages, culture preservation and an own identity as land inhabitants.

Zurzeit supports the DESWOS with its local partners in the developing countries over 20 house building projects in different stages of planning and execution. A typical example is the project for 50 families in the Aleppey district in the southIndian Federal State Kerala. The there partner organization Samhathi selected such, which became impoverished by the Tsunami and personal strokes of fate among the families cared for by it. It concerns to show that self-help for the poorest ones is feasible and joint forces can develop a solution for the housing shortage.

Together with the Indian relief organization the DESWOS began with the work on the project for firm and safe houses for the families. 50 houses with living and sleep area, kitchen, toilet and Veranda are to develop, as well as a cistern for clean drinking water. Hereunder applies the principle of the mutual assistance, it built neighbours and friends with all family members, used. Each family keeps a small loan additional for the setting up a trade, thus becomes the existence a bit more surely. There is usually the women, whom Samhathi can convince to select itself with business initiative on the market umschauen and then a trade: they bake bread and sell meals from small kitchens, them sew child clothes and tailor for their neighbours or them operate vegetable gardens and market conditions. That creates incomes and secures the supply of whole families.

With the project in the closely settled Kerala the families for their life in the rural area receive a new perspective and the drift in the larger places and cities are prevented. In the used environment and with the help of the saving and groups of credits promoted by Samhathi the good social relations with important resources in the poverty becomes: the mutual assistance is a solidary Kraft, which makes a surviving for the arms possible. The families pay the value back of the building material of the houses in small rates into an administered fund. With these repayments they want to finance further houses for other families in emergency. The Solidarprinzip counts also here.

The DESWOS is a technical organization of the development co-operation of the German housing industry. Their house building projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America are models organized building, which are an alternative to the national intervention, for which in most developing countries the means are missing. A part of the projects is bezuschusst by the Federal Ministry for economic co-operation and development (BMZ). The DESWOS recruits the necessary donations at the German housing industry and in their surrounding field in, in addition, with private donor inside and donors. The day of living is one day of special efforts to celebrate to it so far little progress but still much to promote gives. To Germany the long tradition of the self organization and the self-help pointed in particular in genossenschaftlichen housebuilding: organized living is feasiblly, safe and innovative, and thus a way that living becomes as human right reality. Also for humans in developing countries!
