Stresses in Europe 1990-2005: Working intensity and time pressure rose substantial

(openPR) - the European donation for the improvement life and of the conditions of work submitted its 4.Bericht over conditions of work and stresses in Europe, which are based on an inquiry of nearly 30,000 employees in 31 countries. If one regards the development tendencies since the first report in the year 1990, then quite contradictory development tendencies become clear, which concerns the quality of the conditions of work.

Thus it shows up on the one hand that the number of employees, which regard its health and security on the job as endangered, into which last 15 years easily decreased/went back: Of 31% in the year 1991 on 27% in the year 2005. However clear differences between the old EU15-Ländern (25%) exist and the new member states in this point (40%). It is positively emphasized in the report also that the portion in highly qualified occupations of employee employed employees in the past 15 years of 32% to 38% rose. The portion of the jobs for highly qualified employees lies meanwhile in many countries incl. Germany with at least 40%.

On the other side show up however also some findings, which point on negative development tendencies and Veränderungsbedarfe:

• Working intensity, time pressure and stress rose clearly since 1990. The portion of person employed, who must work at least occasionally under very high time pressure, increased from 64% to 79%. There are similar tendencies for the work under very strong date pressure.
• In the payment further a clear gap gapes between men and women. Tendencies that this gap could close, are not to be recognized. Approximately half of all women in the countries of the EU25 are to be assigned to the lower third of the income scale.
• The average weekly work time sank in the last 15 years continuously. This is particularly because of the increasing meaning of part-time job and that to the dismantling of extremely high overtime work. Altogether a clear increase of “atypical conditions of employment” is recognizable: Part-time job rose from 13% to 18%, limited occupation in particular from 1990-2000 became clearly more frequent. Likewise the number of the employees with more than one job rose.
• Report most employees that they are responsible for the work quality (73%) that they solve unexpected problems independently (81%) or that they learn also new with their work (70%). In the development of the last 10 years it shows up however that these characteristics of a qualified and autonomous work did not decrease substantial, but continuously (over in each case approximately 5%).
