Swiss waste statistics: More than half of the settlement wastes uses

(openPR) - 2005 was burned in Swiss refuse incineration plants (KVA) approximately 3,32 million tons waste, approximately 5 per cent more than in the previous year. Reason for it are more waste imported goods from South Germany. For the first time more than half of the domestic settlement waste is used and not burned, reports the industry magazine EUROPATICKER environmental call (www.europaticker.de).

In accordance with the waste statistics 2005 of the federal office for environment (BAFU) the quantity of the wastes burned in KVA amounted to approximately 3,32 million tons. It concerns mainly not usable settlement wastes, inflammable building wastes as well as sewage sludge. Of it approximately 3,06 million tons are allotted to wastes from Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. With the remaining 260,000 tons it acts around imported wastes, usually out of the foreign country close to the border, which were disposed in Swiss refuse incineration plants. Compared to the previous year the imported quantity of waste rose around approximately 180,000 tons and caused thus the rise of the total quantity of the burned wastes around approximately 5%. This increase of the imported goods is to be led back primarily to in June 2005 in Germany introduced deposit prohibition for inflammable wastes.

The waste imported goods are both economically and ecologically meaningful, since thereby on the one hand the extent of utilization of Swiss KVA is improved and on the other hand the polluting Deponierung is abroad avoided by inflammable wastes. The current imported goods will in the future decrease/go back, because abroad own plants are built for refuse incineration. Thus the current high extent of utilization of Swiss KVA does not represent a reason for the production of additional KVA capacities. The overall capacity of the Swiss KVA was 2005 with 3,37 million tons for the guarantee of disposal security sufficiently.

More than half of the settlement wastes are used

51 per cent or 2,5 million tons was used by in the 2005 the settlement wastes of 4,94 million tons, resulted in households and trades. Thus the portion of the used wastes exceeded for the first time the quantity of the burned wastes. In the international comparison Switzerland thereby is appropriate for the recycling ratio further in the top group. With some separate collections such as glass (95% recycling ratio) the recycling potential is to a large extent exhausted, with others as e.g. with paper and cardboard, metals or biogenous wastes can by an optimization of collecting logistics quite still another further increase of the portion of the used settlement wastes be achieved.
