Unique ecological system in Costa Rica in danger. Planned Thunfischfarm endangers sea turtles, Delfine and whales

The Golfo Dulce with Punta Banco (openPR) - Korntal Münchingen (15.11.2006) - the Golfo Dulce is world-wide one of the nature miracles in the southwest of Costa Rica - and one of only three tropical fjords. The large bay accommodates rare and from becoming extinct threatened kinds such as sea turtles, different whale and Delfinarten, whale sharks, sea-birds and colourful tropical fish. Embossment whales bring there their boys to the world, and the beaches are important breeding places for several kinds of sea turtles.

This unique area and ecological system are in highest danger, since an private-economical enterprise in the delta of the large bay plans a wide Thunfischfarm. The effects would be extensive, because Costa Rica is world-wide in particular well-known and estimated for the Ökotourismus. With the fish farm the entire ecological cycle of this nature miracle is destroyed and to mankind goes this uniqueness of nature lost.

The project can be stopped only by acting president OSCAR Arias Sanchez, Nobel peace prize carrier. It must be pointed out seriously that with the establishment of these Thunfischfarm Costa Rica would lose its unique status as environmentally conscious country. Private people and NGO `s already contacted the president and him asked to reject the project.

The action committee protection of species/Action Campaign for Endangered Species brought a on-line Petition into being; in order to ask president OSCAR Arias Sanchez to stop this nature-destructive project.
All are requested to support this Petition and campaign under www.aga-international.de.

The Thunfischfarm in the Golfo Dulce area

The native ones work in Ökolodges, small restaurants and Shops, and Surfer, divers and sport Fischer provide an income for humans. Are dependent about 1000 Fischer, which drive with small boats on the sea, in order to earn their living costs, on the Golfo Dulce.

The planned fish farm at 7,4 km length and 2.2 km broad is to be established to about one and a half kilometers before the place Punta Banco and an Indian reservation. Young Gelbflossenthunfi is dragged in the open sea and over large distances from the farm. There one sets it into the net cages, mästet her with Sardinen from Peru, up to the sales for Sushi in Japan and the USA.

The effects of the Thunfischfarm on this extremely sensitive area would be devastating:

Strong endangerment of the existence of young Thunfi

Delfine, whales, sea turtles and other sea inhabitants end than Beifang in the Fangnetzen. Sea turtles do not reach no more the breeding places at the beach and the slipped young animals can no longer back into the open sea.

Anchors weighing tons, for the stabilization of the net cages, destroy the reefs.

Prohibition of fishing in the proximity of the fish farm. Loss of the best catch reasons and energy source for the adjacents resident and Guyami Indians.

Fodder remainders, Fäkalien and chemicals, for the parasite defense and cleaning of the cages, get the water dirty and are also a health risk for floats, divers and Surfer, that deliver their competitions in the world-well-known Surferort Pavones.

Sharks, which are tightened by the farm, are a further risk.

Increasing environmental pollution by the strongly increased boat traffic, which brings workers, material and fodder to the fish farm.

A singular ecological area and a nature miracle, in addition a healthy fishing and tourism area are to be extracted from the free entrance of the population.

The Petition

The project was approved by the former president of Costa Rica and the former secretary of the environment, although the available environmental compatibility study exhibited large lack. The risks, which result from this project for the environment, were not described, although they are extremely high. The project was stopped on request of the concerning and several Costa Rican environment organizations by the highest court up to the final decision.
