Logo HIIK (openPR) - the Heidelberger Institut for international conflict research (HIIK) presents
with „the Conflict barometer 2006 “its current data and analyses to the global conflict happening of this year. Under that altogether 278 observed conflicts count the politics policies 118 conflicts by force as well as 160 clashes of interests without the employment of physical force. While the number of the crises, i.e. conflicts, in which only sporadically force is used, in the comparison sank to the previous year easily from 90 to 83, rose the number of arguments led with high force intensity clearly from 28 to 35. In particular wars increased with a trebling of two in the year 2005 on six in the year 2006 significantly. After for decades the lowest conditions of conflicts high-by force in the year 2005, 2006 must be spoken therefore altogether of a noticeable rise of the force. Half of the wars with Afghanistan, the Iraq and Israel against the Hisbollah in the region of the front one and middle Orient were delivered. There the second highest number high-by force of conflicts was to be observed. Prominently in this regard Africa was southern the Sahara with altogether 15 conflicts high-by force, under it two wars in Somalia as well as in the Darfur region of the Sudan. The wars in the Iraq and in the Sudan had been already delivered in the year 2005 on this highest intensity stage. Asia was with Sri Lanka in the year 2006 scene of a war likewise. With altogether 90 - for instance a third of all clashes of interests world-wide - Asia and Ozeanien represents the region with most conflicts. Europe and America against it had to register only in each case a conflict high-by force, in Chechnya and Colombia.

A precipitous increase of the force employment was to be observed beyond that in Guinea-Bissau and in the south of the Sudan, where two new conflicts inflamed equal by high force, as well as in the arguments between government and rebel in Senegal and between Israel and Lebanon - the first conflict high-by force between states since 2004. The two latter were delivered in the previous year still forceless and in this year as serious crises.

The total number of the observed conflicts by force and not-by force rose in relation to the previous year of 274 to 278 easily, whereby on the one hand five conflicts 2005 ended broke, but on the other hand in the yearly process nine new off. From the existing conflicts 177 on the same intensity level remains as in the previous year. 46 conflicts escalated - eleven of it around two stages - and 46 DTE-scaled, six of it around two stages.

The Heidelberger Institut is characterised since its establishment 1991 in particular by the fact that it observes also nonviolent conflicts apart from conflicts by force. Thus national and international arguments are already included before a possible escalation into the long-term analysis also.
