Two years after the Tsunami - ADRA builds clarifying systems in Sri Lanka

Reconditioned toilets in Galle (openPR) - after the devastating Tsunami from 26 December 2004 ADRA Austria stood to be drawn as many other organizations also in the temptation a prestigious house project ashore. ADRA decided however against it. Instead ADRA built sanitary plumbings for over 420 new houses in the past two years in Sri Lanka. That is not very public-effectively it can thereby also only heavily to money of private donors be collected. The city Vienna has this project therefore with 180.000,-- € supports. Also the current human development report of the UN gives to the building of toilets and clarifying systems quite. Daily world-wide 4900 children at dirty water die. Clean water gives it however only, if the waste water can to be duly disposed.

Time: The first days after the Tsunami - chaotic!
ADRA could send immediately after the Tsunami the Austrian woman employee Anita Obenaus to Sri Lanka. Initially it went carrying out simply therefore for help in need. Many humans had lost everything. Often roads were not passable. The distribution of the hygiene packages and emergency tents presented itself as large logistic challenge. Often at the airport the patience of the disaster aids was already put to the test. The bureaucracy demanded the their. Auxiliary goods had to be loosened with much negotiation fate from the tariff. Constantly changing regulations made the work more difficult. To send once the international community called tents. The tents were then in Colombo, the capital Sri Lankas, concerned were called it again, it no more tents in the country were left. Beside the first disaster relief it applied to develop the local auxiliary structures and support and lasting remedial measures to prepare be able around long-term.

Time: City Vienna promotes ADRA project with 180.000,-- €
Following the first emergency aid measures ADRA before a heavy decision stood. The relief organization should follow the general trend and also houses build. A small settlement, a ADRA village Such a project would have arrived surely with the donors very good. Despite the much promising marketableness ADRA decided against houses and for sanitary plumbings. What uses it the local population in new houses to live, if their drinking water is dirty and makes ill it The city Vienna could reconstruct the decision of the relief organization and promoted in the consequence the project with 180.000,-- €. The woman employee Anita Obenaus, which was already locally could as a project chief is won and supervised the construction work in the District Galle from beginning.

Initially four public toilets were set again in conditions. In Sri Lanka many dwellings and houses are not equipped with own sanitary units. Public WC plants has therefore again completely different value than in Austria. Then was far with the clarifying systems for again built houses workers of the Samariter of federation Austria and the Salvation Army. Each of the systems consists of three and/or four concreted chambers. Whereby the fourth pit belongs only in the broadest sense to the clarifying system, it concerns thereby the seeping pit. The system is only once locked functions it also satisfyingly in the rain time. „In an area, in which the ground-water level is only scarcely under the earth's surface is it to eminent importantly that the systems are sealed against above, thus the human Fäkalien because of the surface is not rinsed and diseases to spread or as unappetizing Brühe into the drinking water wells arrive “explains to Anita Obenaus.
